Without question, there are some wonderful places to stay in Sao Miguel, Azores. Whether you want to be close to nightlife or immersed in nature, you can find it all on this stunning Portuguese island in the Atlantic. Where To Stay In Sao Miguel, Azores
Deciding where to stay in Sao Miguel, Azores can be tricky since there are so many cool spots you’ll want to check out!
No matter where you stay on Sao Miguel Island, I’d 100% recommend having a rental car. Even though the island is small, renting a car is the best way to get around and ensure you have all the time you want to see different attractions.
Before we look at specific hotels in Sao Miguel, we’ll take a look at the best areas and towns for different types of travelers.
Ponta Delgada
Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel is the main city of the Azores where you’ll find the most nightlife, bars, and restaurants. Ponta Delgada is also where you’ll fly in if traveling by air, or sail in if traveling by sea.
Ponta Delgada is the best place to stay in Sao Miguel for people who want to be in the historical city. It’s also the best option if you plan to do guided Azores tours since most tour experiences leave from there.
The only downside of Ponta Delgada is that the swimming beaches are a bit limited. If you want to be closer to sandy beaches, check out the areas a bit outside of town toward Praia do Pópulo.
We stayed in two different accommodations in the Praia do Pópulo and Sao Roque area during our visit. We liked that it was quieter and we could walk to a large swimming beach. This area is about a 5-10 minute drive from Ponta Delgada and the taxi fare costs about 7 euros each way.
Ribeira Grande
Located on the opposite side of the island but still just a short drive from Ponta Delgada, you’ll find Ribeira Grande, a quiet town perfect for families and surfers.
Ribeira Grande is a great place to stay with kids since there is a nice children’s park in the center of town. It also has a swimming beach with a boardwalk where you can rent surfboards or take lessons.
Furnas
Furnas Azores is one of my favorite places on the island and it’s known for being a (literal) hotbed for geothermal activity. If you choose to stay here, you’ll have easy access to hikes, botanical gardens, and famous hot springs on São Miguel Island.
There’s a small town located in the center of the volcanic crater where you can find stores, restaurants, bars, parks, and playgrounds. All around, Furnas is breathtakingly beautiful and a great place to go for a romantic escape.
Sete Cidades
Sete Cidades is considered one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal and it’s a great place to stay if you plan to do a lot of hikes.
It’s a bit more remote than the other destinations listed and you won’t have access to as many amenities, but it’s worth staying a few nights if you want to do lots of longer hikes and other outdoor activities on the west coast.

The Terra Nostra Garden Hotel is located in Furnas right next to the famous Terra Nostra Botanical Gardens. Visiting these gardens was a highlight of our trip, so I can only imagine how cool it would be to stay just steps away.
In addition to having easy access to the outdoor hot springs in Terra Nostra Park, guests also have an indoor hotel with a garden view and a spa. Make sure to stop by their restaurant to try Cozido!
